The Herb
Meshashringi or the Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that is found in the tropical forest of southern and central India. The extacts from its leaves contain gymnemic acid have long been used in Indian Ayurveda as a natural remedy for Diabetes. The leaves when chewed upon, destroy the sense of the tongue to appreciate the taste of sugar and all saccharine substances.
Action
- The principle constituent of Meshashringi is gymnemic acid, which has anti-diabetic properties. It is known to inhibit hyperglycemia (increased sugar level in the blood) and boosts insulin levels.
- It has also been shown to have a regenerative effect on pancreatic beta cells and is insulinotropic (that which stimulates or affects the production and activity of insulin ).
